The truth was, Kira would have very much liked to go to the restaurant. However, as she said to Thea, Hmm, maybe I shouldn’t be along for your date.

It’s not a date!

It sounds like a date. It was going to be for your birthday. Just you two. That’s a date.

Was she right? Had Brandon planned on asking Thea out? She recalled several times in the past few months when only the two of them had gone places together. A few times, she’d thought about kissing him, wondering what it would be like. Yet, at the end of the day, he was her boss and friend. She didn’t want to risk either relationship status.

Thea was wary about going out, but not because of Brandon. She wanted to check on Mia and had people to answer to. She also had people she owed an ass-kicking. The idea of chocolate and a moment away from everything was tempting, though. She was hungry, as the mention of chocolate so quickly pointed out. The stress and adrenaline of the day had been contributing factors.

She went home to drop off Kira, and Brandon followed her. She changed inside and met him back at his car.

As the sun went down, Brandon drove them through the French Quarter and pulled up in front of a small café with a rooftop seating area strung with lights. The view from this spot was marvelous, and Thea felt like she could step into another time and place and forget all her burdens. Brandon had done that for her. The moment was fleeting but warm.

She imagined coming here to celebrate her birthday next month. Her heart ached pleasantly at the thought. The pair hardly spoke while they were seated and placed their orders. Brandon insisted Thea drink a glass of wine. She ordered cake first and an appetizer second while Brandon settled on a seafood platter. He made it clear this was not a time to formulate plans but to let her know she wasn’t alone.

Halfway through their meal, after she had wolfed down two gigantic slices of chocolate lava cake, Brandon remarked, “Thea, look. I want you to know I’m here for you whenever you’re ready to talk about things. Whatever bothers you, I’m convinced we can handle it together.” He paused, then added, “You’re not alone.”

Thea smiled. “I know, and thank you.” It also helped that she’d gotten a text from Jax an hour ago.

I’m here for you, kid. You know that.

She had Mia and Kira, too. Thea had never really been alone except for those dreadful weeks following her parents’ death. Even then, she’d felt them near her. She still did. In memory and feeling, they were never truly gone.

When they finished their meal, they returned to Brandon’s car, and he drove Thea back to her apartment. They stayed inside his vehicle in quiet company. Thea didn’t want to go back inside yet.

“You know I will talk to you eventually, right?” she commented at last. “It’s not about not wanting to tell you things.
